Family-Based Treatment (FBT)

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) Nutrition Support

Family-Based Treatment empowers parents to take an active role in their child's recovery from an eating disorder. Nisrine Hamad, RD, provides the nutrition coaching component of FBT-informed care, entirely by telehealth.

Evidence-Based Parent-Led Telehealth

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is an evidence-based approach, most often used for adolescents with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, that puts parents and caregivers in charge of their child's nutritional recovery in the early stages of treatment. It generally moves through three phases: full parental oversight of meals to restore weight and stabilize eating, a gradual handoff of control back to the adolescent as they're ready, and finally a focus on healthy adolescent development beyond the eating disorder.

FBT is typically led by a trained family therapist, who runs the core family therapy sessions. Nisrine's role is the nutrition coaching piece within that framework - helping parents translate FBT principles into practical, safe meal planning, and working alongside your child's therapist rather than delivering FBT therapy sessions herself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers families often ask before booking.

FBT is an evidence-based family therapy approach, most often used for adolescent anorexia or bulimia, where parents take an active, structured role in their child's nutritional recovery, especially in the early stages.

Nisrine provides the nutrition coaching piece - meal planning and parent guidance - and works alongside a trained family therapist, who leads the core FBT therapy sessions.

FBT is most established for adolescents with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, though FBT-informed principles can also support other disordered eating presentations depending on your child's needs.

Nisrine coordinates directly with your child's therapist so the nutrition guidance at home stays consistent with what's happening in therapy sessions.
